Early Reading with Doman Learning: New Picture-Integrated Reading Program
We made a mistake when we first released the Reading Before School course by offering it with just reading words. We found that some children were not engaging with their Doman reading program. While most children were happy to see the words, some kids seemed disinterested, causing frustration for both them and their parents. To address this, we added images to accompany the reading words.
For parents currently enrolled in the Reading Before School course, we are excited to offer these new reading materials for free. At Doman Learning, our mission is to provide parents with the best tools for teaching their children. It's important to us to continue offering the highest-quality resources at no additional cost to you. Keep reading to learn why and how to use this new early learning resource.
The Power of Pictures in Early Childhood Learning
I have a list of troubleshooting tips for the Doman reading program. Usually, when parents face attention issues, I have a helpful tip ready. However, I found that some children were simply not interested. One Doman program that always captivates children is Doman Cards in the Gift of Knowledge Course. This program uses beautiful, high-quality pictures to teach kids about the world around them. I began advising parents to add pictures, like our Doman Cards, to the reading program. That’s when we discovered that colorful and beautiful pictures also captivated children's attention for the Doman reading program, and they began to enjoy learning to read more.
As a result, we are adding pictures starting with the first month's Doman reading materials in our Reading Before School Course and will continue to add images to each subsequent month for parents who have signed up for the course. This adjustment not only resolved the initial issue but also enhanced the overall early learning experience. We have found that children retain their reading words better when pictures accompany them, and we are excited to implement this for the first time in the history of the Doman Method. We believe your child will be excited too.
Three Reasons for Adding Pictures to the Doman Reading Program
Engagement: We found that pictures increase children's interest in the Doman reading program. Colorful images that the child can examine boost their engagement. Check out my fun educational games to play below!
Retention: Pictures improve word retention. When children are more interested and engaged, they learn more effectively.
Teaching a Foreign Language: Pictures are a great way to teach English as a foreign language. By showing a picture and then the corresponding word, even children who do not yet speak English can learn it through this method.
What Makes Our Pictures and Reading Materials Different?
Have you noticed that children’s educational materials are often cartoonish? They often fail to respect the innate intelligence of young children, who are brilliant and can absorb information quickly. At Doman Learning, we use precise and clear images that respect the child's intelligence. This approach effectively teaches children real information about the world, bringing a world of knowledge into the home. Children inherently know when they are being respected, a truth I've observed over nearly two decades. They thrive when given materials that they can truly love and learn from. This belief drives our commitment to providing high-quality educational content. Our images are different for the following reasons.
Clear & Concise: We ensure that the object or action being represented is free from distraction, on a clear white background.
Precise: The image is not an abstract representation but exactly what that object or action is.
High-quality: The image is beautiful and exciting to look at for children.
By integrating images into our Reading Before School Course, we are providing a more engaging and effective early learning experience for your child. Our goal is to foster a love for reading and respect for their intelligence, ensuring they receive the best early learning experience possible.
How to Show Pictures Along with Doman Reading Words
Many parents have asked how to show a set of pictures along with reading words. Follow the steps below for a successful teaching session.
Introduce the Set: Say, “Let’s look at some cards of modes of transportation.”
Show the Picture, Then the Word: It is important to show the picture first to give the child context. Say the name of the object when you show the picture, then repeat it when you show the reading word.
Celebrate: Always end the session with enthusiasm. Give a hug or a fist bump accompanied with a “great job!”
Three Early Learning Games to Make Your Doman Reading Program Fun
I always talk about the importance of making learning fun, so I want to leave you with these three fun early learning games you can play with your child. Remember these games are not tests. If your child doesn’t get something right, that’s okay. Always praise them for their effort and hard work.
Three Fun Reading Games
Locate the Picture: In this game, show the child some pictures on a tabletop or floor and ask them to locate one. When the child picks up the card, praise them. Do this until all the cards have been removed.
Match the Reading Word to the Picture: For this game, show your child a reading word and then two pictures, and ask them to match the word with the correct picture.
The Stop Game: For our last game, take a set of images and pick one picture from that set. Then, ask your child to say "stop" when they see that picture. Go through the images one by one until they say stop. End with a hug!
